It is inevitable that when ever the will and the imagination come into conflict, the imagination wins. For instance if I place a wooden plank on the floor and ask you to walk across it, you will do so with ease. However, if I place the same plank across two ten story buildings, most people would not cross it. The reason is simple, While the plank is on the floor your imagination and will are not in conflict, but ten stories high , the imagination is picturing all sorts of dangerous outcomes, particularly falling. You visualize falling, no matter how much you want to cross (your will) but, you cannot because of your fears (your imagination)
This is the reason most hypnotists always tell you to visualize, picture or imagine. It has been said that if you control imagination, you control the subject, thus hypnosis occurs.
Others believe that hypnosis is present whenever you are able to by-pass a persons critical and analytical factors.

Would you be surprised to know that you go into a hypnotic stage twice a day already?

The state of hypnosis, is a specific state of mind that can be measured by brain waves.
There are various states of mind, or brain wave patterns, which occur in your brain each and every day. They are:

  • Beta - This is the awakened state of alertness.
  • Alpha -This state is one of heightened creativity and enhanced relaxation. Hypnosis is somewhere between sleep and wakefulness.
  • Theta - This is the brink of sleep, You may have creative insights in this stage, just as many scientists, poets, and artists have
  • Delta - This is the deep sleep stage.

We all go into the Alpha state twice a day, when we sleep and wake up.
Now that's not so scary is it?
It is in this relaxed state of mind when we are most susceptible to suggestion.
Some compare hypnosis to a deep state of concentration like when you're having a day dream, or when you're engrossed in a TV program.

Doctors have  performed surgeries under hypnosis (in a deepened stage) with no pain and little bleeding for the patient.

I would say that's pretty amazing.
